Cocoa House stands as an iconic landmark in Nigeria’s history, with its towering presence and rich heritage. Constructed in 1965, it marked a monumental achievement as the first high-rise building not only in Nigeria but in the entire tropical African region. Odu’a Museum and Hall of Fame is on the 24th floor of Cocoa House, Dugbe.
The visionaries behind this architectural marvel were Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Ladoke Akintola, and other Yoruba political leaders, representing the government of the Western Region.
Financed through the proceeds from cocoa sales, the 23-story structure soared as a symbol of progress and determination. Originally named ‘Ile Awon Agbe,’ meaning ‘House of Farmers,’ Cocoa House stood tall at 105 meters, a testament to the ambitious aspirations of its founders.
Today, Cocoa House’s legacy endures as a testament to the foresight and dedication of early political leaders in southwestern Nigeria. Managed by Odua Investment Company Limited, this historic edifice continues to inspire awe and reverence as a cornerstone of the nation’s architectural and cultural heritage.
